Allocation of copies to your customers are managed through enhanced “Order Regulation” applications, where the prime objective is in supplying the most appropriate number of copies based on category sales data to wholesaler / distributor / newsagents and / or retailers within the title's target market. The key components are the program options for allocation analysis and it is these program options and rule settings that ultimately designate the quantities that will be sent to each individual customer, and thus are directly involved with achieving sales efficiency targets for Publishers while optimizing sales and profitability for your distribution company.
The system compares like issues, past sales of the title, category performance and like store cluster performances to forecast sale potential. Our clients use DPS system functions to achieve sale goals drawing on a detailed understanding of the Publisher's strategy for the title, and the distributor’s appreciation of the market potential for the category.
Your customer’s “draw” copies are determined based on the average sale of that (or similar) titles, plus add-on stock aimed at achieving the agreed title sell-through. Publisher over or under print supply (allotted copies) is the only other factor that may complicate the process. Your customer’s supply can be nudged up or down based on the total publisher supply.
Significant over supply is managed through a maximum supply formula matrix, which trims the excess off according to rules you set for sell through performance.
The Next
Generation System
The DPS NGS/6000 Periodical Category Management System is more than
just a "built-from-the-ground-up" state-of-the-art circulation
solution; it's a business-wide planning and operations tool.
Historically periodical distribution in North America was often about 'maximum supply' but in reality we believe it's time to implement 'optimum supply'. Using The DPS NGS/6000 Periodical Category Management System you will be better equipped than ever to achieve that.
The NGS/6000 Periodical Category Management System moves allocations into a new era with the ability, not just to determine the average sale of a title and apply buffer stock to allow for sales movement, but instead to specifically allocate based on your customers sales volatility (how much their sales fluctuate) for each title. (Mean Deviation off Average Sale)
This is a significant advancement to how allocations have been performed on competing solutions and other distributors. No longer will your customers with the same average sale of a title need be supplied the same amount. Your customer’s supply can be determined by the sales pattern of that title.
For example if the customer’s average sale is 10 but he has never sold more than 12 and less than 8, there's no advantage to anyone of sending them 15. Conversely, if their average is 10 but they sometimes sell 2 and other times sell 17 we need to allow for that movement. That's what volatility is all about. That's what “optimum supply” is all about.
The DPS ”next generation system”, the NGS/6000 also has a 'smoothing techniques' that identifies abnormal sales and adjusts their impact for the distribution formula equation. The system reacts to trends and observes if your customer is on an upward or decreasing sales trend and forecasts accordingly.
A DPS NGS/6000 Periodical Category Management Solution never loses sight of the fact that we all want— more profitable sales and less returned stock. At DPS we're all continually looking to understand the ever changing single copy sales market place, the uniqueness of the our client’s operations and circumstances, and facilitate your ability to achieve your Publisher's aims and strategy while profitability growing your business.
