NOTE: Click on the link or buttons below to locate documents to download to view and/or print.

Problem Statement:

  • Hardback Book Returns are cumbersome to sort by publisher for return and require significant labor.

  • Need reasonable ROI with 50 to 80 thousand returned books capacity for a 24 hour period.

  • Need to provide accurate accountability with data available to multiple sources (ftp / ASCII / XML / and ODBC capable) and integrate to HOST system to comply with industry standards and accepted reporting.

Solution:

3,600 units of average book size per hour
28,800 units of average book size per 8 hour shift

Operator places books on in-feed conveyance face up with no required gap between product.  Books convey to a high speed gapping belt drive to separate books for in-feed scan and move to appropriate sortation transfer mechanism.  The below designed machinery has 17 chutes to gaylords (any multiple of sorts can be achieve in parallel or serial configurations).  Overhead belt drive electrical sweep pusher (see pictures below) move books to proper chute.  Ultrasonic photo-eye is used at each Gaylord to detect full, plus a proximity photo-eye determines if a Gaylord is present. Operator may cause a Gaylord to be completed at system console to cause automated packing list and shipping label to be produced.

Includes: Label printer, handheld back-up scanner, high-rel Data Logic overhead scanner, console station, SQL database, file import and export for stand-alone or integrated system

Total machinery foot print is about 60 feet long (including in-feed conveyor) by 10 foot wide (with Gaylord cartons in place).

Overhead wire and electrical track enclosed above sorter
Yellow photo cell senor on sweep chute to detect carton full

Three scanners positioned to capture book scan code at entrance

Multiple chutes with overhead sweep pushers parallel positioned

Overhead belted dual sweeps for bi-directional sortation

Sweep pushers are shrouded for complete personal protection

Protective pull wire safety stops to deactivate entire system

All product accounted as a missed divert or no scan in last carton.
Reporting indicates where each book is located and a miss divert is NOT calculated to a carton to keep integrity of return accurate.

The control station server is in a user ergonomic and protective enclosure to ensure easy access and secure SQL data system.

Windows based SQL database user friendly visual real-time book transport and divert displayed on large screen system console.

Simplistic operator GUI interface using familiar easy-to-setup configurations with voice system command output to inform users of operational activity and events.
